I answered the phone and on the other end was my brother Stan. He wanted to wish me a Happy Birthday. This was a ritual, usually a week late. He’d start with, “So how old are you now, 55”? I would giggle and say YES 55 and thanked him for his lapse in memory or good judgement. I, like most women, don’t like being reminded that they’re another year older but I’m going to miss that call next year when I would probably be “55” again.
