Our Heritage

Proudly Serving Lindsay
& the Surrounding Communities Since 1916

1916 - 2016; 100 Years of Funeral Care,
The Dash in Two Dates May be Small but It Means So Much
In March of 1916, my grandfather James (Jim) Mackey and his wife Myrtle, arrived in Lindsay on a train from Oshawa, with their furniture and a suit case. This was the beginning of Jim’s and Myrtle’s dream; a dream that grew into providing various funeral services throughout the local communities.

Together with their children, grandchildren and many dedicated staff members, they made ‘Mackey Funeral Home’ the establishment that it is today. Their family consisted of seven children; Hazel, Linden, Margaret, Myrtle, Gordon, James and Walter (who died in infancy).  The remaining 6 committed their lives to maintaining the family traditions, and serving the community of Lindsay and surrounding areas in various ways.

The Boys took over the furniture and funeral business, and continued their father’s dream, while the girls embarked on other business ventures, Walker Jeweller’s, MacArthur Drugs, nursing and dietary department head.   All were engaged in serving the community in which they lived.

In the early 40’s, Mackey Funeral Home moved from their Kent Street store, a furniture and funeral supply store, into a building designed with the community in mind.  This was at 33 Peel Street, Lindsay, a location, offering a chapel with pews and organ, visitation rooms and lounge, meeting the needs of that time.

Today, in the same building, as it has been transformed with larger rooms and up-to-date broadcasting and media equipment, fresh décor, lighting and furnishings, together with the dedicated professional staff, we continue to provide exceptional care for the families we look after.  The chapel is a sanctuary, with its beautiful stained glass windows, providing a place of comfort to many as they remember family funeral services held here during the past few decades.  As one person said, “I find peace in this space“.

Mackeys aim to continue to provide a full range of funeral care, including visitations, funerals, memorial services, burials, cremations, private family gatherings and post funeral receptions. We guarantee a level of excellent and professional, personalized service, designed to fit everyone’s individual needs and budget. When cremation is chosen as your funeral care,  services can be planned after a death occurs with more time to plan. Working with the Riverside Crematorium, located on Lindsay Street south here in Lindsay, only enhances our ability to deliver this quality of funeral care.

Funeral Pre Planning is a specialty of ours,  we believe it is a key part of a good estate plan; as important as planning your next move in life, succession of your business,  a happy retirement, or in certain palliative care or end of life care strategies, your will, power of attorney are just the begining of a proper plan.   I suggest that a Funeral Pre Plan, is a fundamental part of any person’s life. Death is a stressful time for any family, and myself and the staff here at Mackey Funeral Home are here to support and guide you through the steps to ensure you receive the funeral care you want.

At Mackey Funeral Home, we have prided ourselves in being flexible, supportive providers of traditional and non-traditional funeral arrangements for the last 100 years.  There is absolutely no pressure for families to spend more money than they need. We believe that dignity and love are not measured by the expenses incurred by families at a time of loss.
